Sports Pages #13 (Formerly SP#15)

Reflecting back on the movie Hoop Dreams, the significance of sport in the African American culture is extremely important. Especially when it comes to high school basketball players or football players who want to make it to the professional league. The two boys from the film had to keep motivated and dedicated while everything else in their lives was still happening.

I chose to compare the film Hoop Dreams and Love and Basketball. Both of these films have high school basketball players who are African American and want to make it to the NBA. In the film Love and Basketball, the main character is extremely dedicated to his sport and continues to play through out college as well as the NBA. He also has an African American girlfriend who plays basketball and wants to play professionally. These two films both show the struggles and lives that these payers had before, during and after their basketball careers. I think this is good because it's more realistic, and show that not everyone or every film has a happy ending.

Overall, I don't think that sport is damaging to any race. I would have said yes if we didn't see all races playing each and every sport, but we do. Although it may be more difficult for some races to get into the professional leagues, I still think that sport is healthy for everyone. It can be an outlet for some people, and like in the movie Love and Basketball, there were rough times for these athletes, and sport was a way for them to release their feelings.
